Stochastic Process Theory

One appropriate language for the dynamics of biological systems in mesoscopic level is the stochastic process theory, involving the Brownian motion theory and extensions thereof. Recently it was discovered that the noises, thermal or nonequilibrium, can endow the systems with coherence and resonance to external modulation and fluctuations contrary to commom sense. These novel noise-assisted phenomena, called stochastic resonance and stochastic ratchet give rise to new possibilities for biological cooperativity and sensitivity to environments.
